Your Sand Soldiers have [Weaponmaster].1,
: Play a 2
Sand Soldier unit token to your base. Use only if you've played an Equipment this turn.
Legend · Rare
grants Weaponmaster to your Sand Soldiers and has an activated ability (cost shown on the card) that plays a 2 Might Sand Soldier token to your base, usable only if you’ve played an Equipment this turn. The most common misplay is assuming the token always gets Weaponmaster or can always auto-equip an item — Weaponmaster only functions at play time and only if the conditions and targets are valid per the Weaponmaster rules .
You activate while is on the board and play the token while Azir remains on board.
Because Azir’s static line is applying at the time the token is played, the Sand Soldier token has Weaponmaster when it is played and its Weaponmaster trigger may be resolved per the Weaponmaster rules .
You activate but Azir is removed from the board before the token is played (the play of the token resolves after Azir leaves).
If Azir’s grant of Weaponmaster is no longer applying at the instant the token is played, the token will not have Weaponmaster and no Weaponmaster triggers will occur. The presence of Weaponmaster is a characteristic that must be true at the time the unit is played to create a Weaponmaster trigger .
A replacement or other effect causes the token to be duplicated as it is played (for example, an effect that says “if you would play a token, play that token and an additional copy instead”).
Apply rule 375: the additional copy inherits modifications that were applied to the original play event. Each resulting token that is played will be considered separately for Weaponmaster triggers if they have Weaponmaster at the time they are played .
Two Sand Soldiers you control (or two Weaponmaster instances) both try to equip the same Equipment when they are played.
Multiple Weaponmaster triggers are placed on the chain separately and may choose the same Equipment; each resolves separately. If, upon resolution, the Equip cost cannot be paid or the Equipment cannot be detached/attached, that resolution will fail to move the Equipment and it stays where it is .
You try to use Weaponmaster to attach an Equipment that has no Equip cost printed on it.
Weaponmaster can choose an Equipment even if it lacks an Equip ability, but if the chosen equipment has no Equip cost to pay then the cost cannot be paid and thus it cannot be attached via Weaponmaster .
Do the Sand Soldier tokens created by get Weaponmaster and can they immediately attach an Equipment?
A Sand Soldier token will have Weaponmaster at the moment it is played only if the static grant from is applying at that moment. If it has Weaponmaster when played, the Weaponmaster Play Effect will trigger and may let you choose an Equipment you control and pay its Equip cost reduced by [A] to attach it, subject to the usual limitations (for example, whether the Equip cost can be paid and whether the Equipment can be detached/attached) .
If multiple Sand Soldiers with Weaponmaster are played at the same time, can they all equip the same Equipment?
Multiple instances of Weaponmaster trigger separately and can choose the same Equipment; each resolves separately. If one resolution results in the Equipment being no longer available or the Equip cost cannot be paid for a subsequent resolution, that later resolution will fail to attach the Equipment .
Can Weaponmaster choose an Equipment that has no Equip ability or no Equip cost?
Weaponmaster can choose an Equipment whether it has an Equip ability or not, but if that chosen card has no Equip cost printed then there is no cost to pay and the Weaponmaster effect cannot pay a missing cost, so it cannot be attached this way. If the Equipment’s Equip cost does not contain [A], the reduction from Weaponmaster does not apply but the cost can still be paid normally if possible .
Does Weaponmaster do anything after the unit is already on the board?
No. Weaponmaster’s functional text is a Play Effect that operates when the unit is played; it has no function while on the board beyond being a characteristic that other effects can reference .
If a replacement effect modifies the event of playing the token (for example, creates an extra copy), do those copies also get Weaponmaster triggers?
Yes—per rule 375, if a Replacement Effect causes additional tokens to be played as part of the same event, those additional copies inherit modifications from the original and will be considered for triggers like Weaponmaster if they have Weaponmaster at the time they are played .
